Kracie Popin Cookin Japanese Festival

After going through the large box of Kracie kits I had, I found another one. Guess this calls for a celebration! Thankfully this kit has everything I need to do that. Four different components here being french fries, candy apples, chocolate bananas, and corn on the cob, so it's sure to be involved but no short on fun.

I expected a lot of components in this kit, and that's exactly what I got. Three different mats, 5 packets of powder, some yellow soft candy, sprinkles, toothpicks, and a shovel-spoon (my favorite!). The cutting board mat in particular seems rather excessive, but I guess it's nice to create the mood.

The first step, as usual, is to mix some of the powders in with water. The apple one mixed flawlessly although seems a bit too liquid-y than normal. The fries on the other hand were the opposite, not enough water to mix the entire packet, to which I then added more water, but then the fries seemed to get really soggy. The candy apple seems to be artificial in the best way possible, having vibrant and slightly apple-y sweetness in its smell. The french fries on the other hand... have no smell, which is odd since the french fries in another Kracie kit had a distinctly potato smell.

Despite being soggy, the fries turn out well. The taste though is distinctly not like that of a french fry: it's a candy taste. Not too distinguishable as to which flavor but there's a mix of sweetness, tanginess, and a bit of courness, maybe lemon? There seems to be some hint of citrus in here, so who knows. As I was expecting a french fry taste this is a huge bait and switch, and though it tastes okay I can't help but be a little disappointed.

Onto the next portion, the corn. This was a combination of the yellow soft candy and the harder corn pellets inside one of the packets. This one also seems to have the generic candy smell, but one distinctly sweet, rather than tangy or slightly sour. I've had this before in other kits and it;s nice. The crunch should add a nice touch to it as well.

Finally, the banana. This is essentially a smaller version of a kit I've done before, and the same components here being banana, chocolate, and sprinkles. Once again the banana has a slightly artificial smell that could still be redeemed. It doesn't seem to come together well with the amount of water I added, instead being slimier than an overripe banana. It's going to be hard to dip these in chocolate without them falling apart, but I'll give it my best...

Not great, but not terrible looking either. After that arduous process, the other components are all complete. The corn tastes... nice, obviously I would've liked a real corn flavor here but it's plenty sweet and has a lot of interesting fruit flavors in it, in addition to the nice crunch the kernels add. The chocolate banana is pretty tasty, being always a good concept, but not quite as good as the other one, and the sliminess is again off-putting. But the chocolate brings it all together and the sprinkles add some nice crunch. The candy apple was rather disappointing after how it smelled. Maybe this is coming down from the strong chocolate banana flavors but it tastes relatively flavorless, obscured by all the sweetness, and the texture is way too soft.

This kit was a nice concept, but ultimately flawed in a few ways that made it not as tasty or fun as it could be. Still a nice collection of sweets, but with some realism and better textures this could've been so much more.

Rating: 4 - Boof!
